Scholastic Books
We are going to be doing another Scholastic Reading order. The order is due October 11, 2013. You may shop online by going to this website: https://orders.scholastic.com/MCKGY and typing our class code MCKGY when you order or you may use the paper copy attached to the class newsletter. Please remember that ordering books with Scholastic is not mandatory, it just helps get books in classrooms, homes and in kids hands. For every book you order Scholastic gives me points to order books for my classroom too.
Mathematics
In mathematics 2nd grade is learning about subtracting numbers up to 1000 and 1st grade is learning about adding numbers in the 10’s...subtracting numbers in the 10’s will be next. You will find the math newsletter appropriate to your child’s grade attached.
Reading
In reading we are continuing to work on strategies. We will constantly be working on how to decode words when we read but our strategies are becoming more sophisticated. We are working on stopping when we read and thinking. We have learned that we can wonder, predict, and ask who, what, where, and when questions as we read. This helps us become better readers and thinkers.
Writing
We have been working really hard on our free choice writing in our classroom. We are now working on getting our writing published so we can have an author’s share. On Monday, October 14th at 8am we would like you to come and hear your child read their story in an author’s share. Kids will be reading in small groups where you will listen to your own child reading along with a small group of other kids. Please feel free to come listen to a small group of kids read and then go to work a little later that day. We plan to finish the author share by 8:30 A.M. so you can go back to work if need be.
