Dear 1st and 2nd grade families,
Welcome to grade 1 and 2 in my classroom!!! I have attached a supply list below, a class schedule. and various information. If you don't have time to get the supplies this weekend don't worry, I have plenty for the kids to use until you have time to pick stuff up. Please plan to bring your own snack for snack time (Snacks should be healthy and not contain chocolate or a lot of sugar). If you are unable to bring your own snack or forget once or twice please consider donating to our snack fund. Please contact me if your child needs a scholarship for school supplies they are available on a need basis:
School Supply List (many of these items become community supplies that we all use):
Communication
The classroom newsletter will be emailed every Friday. Any additional information will be sent through e-mail. Please feel free to come to me with any questions or concerns. My e-mail is [email protected]. If you need to change after-school plans, please e-mail by 7:30 a.m. or contact the office before 12:00 p.m., (907) 523-1850. I am also available for conferences by appointment. If you do not have regular access to email, please indicate that with a note, and I’ll send hard copies home whenever possible.
Homework:
Homework comes home on Monday as a large packet for the entire week. Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday night with no homework for Friday-Sunday. It should be completed by Friday and returned as a complete packet. All homework should not be done in one night it should be spread out to 20 minutes of homework a night along with 20 minutes of reading at home (by yourself or with a parent) The homework folder should be returned to school daily so that announcements and work may be put inside. Homework will be sent home in the same folder after being reviewed. The first homework begins after Open House.
Every once in a while nightly assignments will be assigned as needed and will be announced via email. If you and your child cannot figure out a portion of the homework, please attach a note—or send an email—and I’ll be glad to give your child individual attention during class. In addition if your written homework is taking more than 20 minutes a night (of on-task behavior) please send me a note and let me know.
Library
Library day is on Wednesday. Make sure your child brings their library book to school so they may check out a new book.
P.E.
P.E. is on Wednesdays and Fridays. Each child should bring their own P.E. shoes that will remain at school. Please send your child with appropriate clothing for running and exercise on gym days. Please make sure the soles are non-marking soles and they have your child’s name inside each shoe. Shoes go home during long holiday breaks for parents to look over, clean...etc. Then they should be returned the day after the long holiday break.
Arrival and Dismissal
School begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Students will be allowed into the building at 7:55 a.m. The school does offer a breakfast program. Please see the mailing from the school district, or inquire at the school office, for procedures. Students arriving before entry time are asked to wait in front of the school at the main entrance, or families may make other arrangements with the RALLY program.
Classroom Rules-Based on Whole Brain Research
Rule One: Follow directions quickly!
Rule Two: Raise your hand for permission to speak
Rule Three: Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
Rule Four: Make smart choices!
Rule Five: Keep your dear teacher happy!
The children have decided that the consequences for not following the rules will be:
1. Reminder
2. 5 minutes time out of recess
3. 10 minutes time out of recess and a call home
We are also working as a class to earn compliments (Praise Points). When we have reached our goal, we will earn a privilege. These will be decided upon by the class each time that the goal is met.
Students are responsible for their actions and their choices. My goal is to help them to make choices that follow the rules. Students reflect on their choices during a student-teacher conference when they have made choices that do not help themselves or our community.
Snacks:
Our class has a mid-morning snack each day. Students need to bring their own snacks. Snacks should be simple (one item) and nutritious (fruits, vegetables, crackers, granola bars, string cheese, etc...) Please remember to send healthy snacks and a water bottle each day. Make sure that all containers and bottles are marked with the child’s name. Water bottles may sit at your child’s seat so they are not getting up and down for a drink from the fountain while they are working. Water bottles may remain at school the whole week and then they go home on Fridays for a deep cleaning. This helps us stay focused and on task. Also, Whole Brain research states that children need to be hydrated for their brain to be receptive to new information. We do have nut and gluten allergies in our classroom. Please let your child know that we do not share snacks for any reason at school. Ms. Nelson’s snack bin is the only place where we share snacks that she provides for kids that forgot a snack that day.
Breakfast and Lunch:
Our school breakfast and lunch programs will again be offered by NANA Management Services. For information on the program, check the District’s website http://www.juneauschools.org, or contact the Nutritional Services manager at 780-1414. Our class will go to lunch at 11:20-11:40 and then lunch recess from 11:40-11:55. It’s a good idea to mark boxes with names clearly visible, since lunch containers occasionally find their way to other classrooms or the lost and found. I encourage you to come to school and eat with your child at any time (lunch is served in the commons area).
Recess/Clothing:
We have three recesses per day, and as you may know, Harborview sends students out for much-needed fresh air and exercise in all but the most inhospitable weather. Please make sure your child comes to school with appropriate outdoor clothing. Please also make sure that these outdoor clothes have student names in them. Coat areas are tight shared spaces, so belongings may get mixed up without good labeling.
Birthdays
If you wish to celebrate a birthday in school, please send/or bring healthy snacks to share for your child’s birthday during snack time from 9:30-9:45 a.m. or the end of the day from 2:15-2:30 p.m. (cupcakes or sweets are ok to send at the end of the day only) Parents are welcome to come to school for their child’s birthday celebration; please make sure you have checked the date and time with Ms. Nelson before you arrive. If you are having a party outside of school and wish for us to pass out invitations, please make sure that there is one for each child. If you are only inviting a few students, please pass out invitations outside of school.
Volunteers
Please see the sign-up sheets for volunteer opportunities during open house. I love volunteers!!! They help my classroom run much more smoothly. Volunteers will begin after open house.
I look forward to a wonderful year of working together as partners in your child’s education!
