Dear families, We had a great first week of school! I was glad to have met all the children and parents Tuesday, and it meant that more children were at ease entering their new classroom with their new teacher. We spent most of the day talking about and thinking about our class community, particularly reasons for having rules and why we should follow them, as well as the systems in our classroom that we have to help us be good community members. At Back to School Night, I will explain to all parents our star student and praise point systems…but they might come up in family conversation before then! I will also explain our homework routine at that time, so until then, there will not be regular nightly homework. All of grade 2 is starting homework on September 19th. However, the children will be taking home a “homework folder” nightly in order to safely take home any notices from school and also safely deliver any notes from home to the school. Please help your child remember to check the folder nightly and bring it to school each morning. While there will not be regular “homework” due tomorrow, I am sending home a fun project for the children to complete and return. Included in tonight’s folder is also the contact information for sharing with the class. There are three students who have not been here yet; when they arrive and I receive this information from them, I will let you know and you can fill in the blank rows with their information. Please remember that on days 1, 3 and 5 the children should be wearing sneakers for P.E. and they should bring a healthy snack daily to eat during their morning recess. Particularly while the weather is still hot, I would like to encourage each child to bring a large water bottle to school. I will allow students to have water bottles in the classroom and encourage them to drink frequently to stay healthy. As with all snack and lunch containers, please ensure the child’s name is clearly marked on the water bottle. Once again, thank you all for the time you took Tuesday to come to school. It is a pleasure to be working together with so many great families, and I look forward to seeing you again at Back to School Night on September 1st! Unlike in grade 1, the grade 2 presentation starts in the LP gym and then we end in the classrooms. Please go to the LP gym for grade 2-curriculum information. Sincerely, Betty Nelson Welcome to Grade Two! This will be an exciting year. You will have a lot of opportunities to make new friends and learn about many different subjects. Grade 2 students begin on, Wednesday, August 17th, we can’t wait to meet you!
I really love teaching. This is my 13th year teaching and my sixth year at HKIS. I came to Hong Kong from Juneau, Alaska where I was the gifted coordinator at a local school. My husband David also works at HKIS, my son Theoren is in Grade 2 and I have a one-year-old baby girl named Isla. In my spare time, I enjoy playing Mahjong (麻將), scrapbooking, hiking and going to the beach with my family. The Lower Primary office is working on a time and day for you to come to school and see the classroom and meet me on Tuesday, August 16th. On that day you will come to the sixth floor of the Lower Primary building to 6B3 at your assigned time (your parents got this via e-mail) to meet me and look around your new classroom. I look forward to meeting you and your family. Please also ask your parent(s) to save the date for our Open House on Thursday, the 1st of September from 5:30 to 8:30 PM in the Lower Primary (LP) gym (we will move up to my classroom after the gym presentation). The office will send your parents more details by email in the near future. Sincerely, Ms. Betty Nelson |
